A very scenic self guided cycle and featuring some of the region's favourite wineries, this is a truly great day out!

Either meet us at our shop in Ahuriri or we can pick you you from your accommodation. We will transfer you to Havelock North, the start of the beautiful Tuki Tuki River trail.  Your adventure starts with the wineries of Black Barn, Te Mata Estate and Akarangi in Havelock North where the wine tasting starts early!  With your first winery visits under your belt we also highly recommend a visit to the Origin Earth sample room to savour some of the best cheeses you’ll ever taste before departing Havelock North.

From here you enjoy a 16 km cycle on the limestone cycle trail following the Tuki Tuki River, to the coastal communities of Haumoana and Te Awanga.  The views are stunning as you cycle the raised stop-bank trail and look out over orchards, vineyards, corn fields and farmland.

Reaching the coast you’ll be ready to taste some more fine wine at Elephant Hill, Clearview Estate and Te Awanga Estate.  If lunch is on your wishlist we are happy to assist with reservations at Clearview Estate. Te Awanga also make some of the best pizzas in Hawke’s Bay.

At the end of the day you will be collected and transferred back to Ahuriri or your accommodation if required.

NB:  Most wineries charge for tastings which is payable direct.

Opening hours at wineries vary and some wineries are closed over winter months. Please check at the time of booking the number of wineries you should expect to find open.  Wherever possible Takaro Trails will advise of closures due to private functions however we cannot be held responsible for closures we have not been advised of.  Transport is from/to the Napier or Hastings isites or central accommodation only.

Departing the port village of Ahuriri you cycle around the port to the Napier CBD, a world renowned Art Deco treasure. Spend some time enjoying the unique facades of the beautiful buildings before continuing south, following Marine Parade with spectacular views across the sea to Cape Kidnappers.

After travelling approx. 15 km you arrive in the village of Clive, a great place for a refreshment stop.  Continuing on the trail through the East Clive wetlands, home to numerous black swans, you eventually arrive at Black Bridge and the mouth of the Tuki Tuki river.  Cycle through the coastal communities of Haumoana and Te Awanga where you have the option to enjoy lunch at Clearview Estate or Hygge Café at Clifton.

At the end of the day you will be collected and transferred back to Ahuriri.

Cost includes: Bike, pannier & helmet hire, water bottle, route instructions & trail map and return transport from the Cape Coast to Ahuriri.  (Min 2 people per booking).

Your cycle  self guided tour starts at the Takaro Trails base in the historic port village of Ahuriri, Napier.  From here you cycle the short distance to the National Tobacco Building, one of New Zealand’s most photographed buildings with its distinctive mix of Art Deco and Art Nouveau styles.  This building is now home to the Tony Bish Urban Winery and we recommend you make a visit to see the barrel room, sample his excellent Chardonnay and learn about his unique ‘Golden Egg’ wine making process.  And ask about the gin too....

Joining the cycle trail you then make your way past fishing boats and old port warehouses to the Ahuriri Estuary.  The trail meanders for approx. 10 kms through this low-lying wetlands area, home to many species of wading birds and other wildlife.  As you cycle along it is sobering to reflect that prior to the 1931 earthquake this area was all a vast tidal inlet before the land was lifted 1.8m in the mighty shake.  You can include a detour to Bayview where you will find the relaxed Crab Farm winery, a real jewel.

On reaching the suburb of Taradale you leave the estuary behind and cycle approximately 1 km to the acclaimed wineries of the Mission Estate and Church Rd where you can visit their cellar doors and try the wines.  The final 6 kms of your ride loops back through sheep farming country to complete the circuit back to Ahuriri.
