Department of Conservation

Napier isite and the Department of Conservation operate a strategic partnership agreement whereby Napier isite provide visitors with DOC conservation and recreation information and a booking service for sales of DOC product including Great Walks, hut tickets and hut passes . This has been in existence since 2016 when DOC closed their Napier office to the public.

In the Hawke's Bay region The Department of Conservation manage the 13 hectare Cape Kidnappers Gannet Reserve, including the Saddle and Reef gannet  colonies. When both of these colonies are closed to the public, the Black Reef colony can be viewed from the beach. Daily tide times are provided by Napier isite to customers.

A variety of DOC recreational activity including short walks and tramping/hiking tracks are available within the Hawke's Bay region. Napier isite provides comprehensive information on Boundary Stream Mainland Island, Lake Tūtira, Tangoio Falls Scenic Reserve, White Pine Bush Scenic Reserve, Lake Ōpouahi, Kaweka and Ruahine Forest Parks and the Great Walk at Lake Waikaremoana. We also stock information about all other Great Walks in New Zealand.

Napier isite staff keep in regular contact with the Napier Department of Conservation staff and participate in Department of Conservation organised trips to familiarise themselves with the day walks, hikes and other local DOC product in Hawkes Bay.

Napier isite can book Department of Conservation GREAT WALK huts and campsites throughout New Zealand at no extra charge.

  We also sell the following:

  • Back country hut passes – for serviced and standard Department of Conservation (DOC) huts
  • Topographical maps of Ruahine and Kaweka Forest Parks - $9.00
