Painter/composer Lee Gaylor’s ‘Night Before Halloween’ exhibition is a collection of new, never previously exhibited works, all, as he likes to say, ‘diabolically hatched’ during his 2020 season.
Excerpts from Lee’s compositions will drift about occasionally during the opening evening, and with its varied assortment of Egyptian tombs, purple-headed waiters, portraits whose eyes follow you and much more, Lee hopes that there will be something for everyone to like or be surprised by.
Early attendees will also receive free limited edition prints, and purchasers free bonus paintings (while stocks last) plus a complimentary published music book, commemorating the occasion.

Born in London in 1962, Lee Gaylor showed an early interest in both art and music, initially doodling all kinds of absurdly proportioned super-heroes and painting a memorable wonky-looking hill and alarmingly mysterious moonlit sky. Gravitating predominantly towards music in his teens, he nonetheless continued to paint intermittently over the years, sometimes producing surprisingly satisfactory results, and at others, garbage cans full of bullet-riddled canvases.
In the 1980s he attended the Conservatorium of Music in Auckland after which time he rented an art studio in downtown Auckland, a tenure which eventually ended abruptly after a preposterous argument during which he had been asked to justify why he was painting on fluorescent pink cardboard.
Eventually settling in Napier, with the help of certain other individuals he had several children and worked as a music teacher and in an organic food store. Finally, in 2019, having returned to painting time and again, a catalytic moment occurred while watching an old episode of legendary painting teacher Bob Ross in which Ross “beat the devil out of” his brush, as he seemingly never tired of doing. At that moment, Lee resolved to paint consistently, and now, with his work gathering interest locally and around the country, hasn’t looked back.
Finally, in 2019, having returned to painting time and again, a catalytic moment occurred while watching an old episode of legendary painting teacher Bob Ross in which Ross “beat the devil out of” his brush, as he seemingly never tired of doing. At that moment, Lee resolved to paint consistently, and now, with his work gathering interest locally and around the country, hasn’t looked back.
