In this fun and relaxed workshop, you will learn how to create a small open woven kete using the whakapuare method, and a small decorative ipu using the kupenga method, out of harakeke (flax). Tutor Lee Olsen will guide you through the process of raranga (weaving) step-by-step, using the traditional harakeke grown locally.
This workshop is suitable for those with varying weaving experience, beginners to intermediate, with all materials included.

Lee Olsen lives in Hawke’s Bay and has been weaving with harakeke for over 15 years. It was seeing the beautiful kete that the Nannies treasured that first inspired her to weave. Kete are still her favourite, and there are so many different variations. You can use different whakairo (patterns), different widths of whenu, different colours, different adornments and different fibres. So much room for creativity!
Creative Arts Napier reserves the right to cancel this workshop a week prior to the start date in the rare event of insufficient bookings.
