Welcome the Godwits/kuaka back to the Ahuriri Estuary. The long-haul, non-stop flight of the bar-tailed godwit/kuaka from Alaska to Napier’s Ahuriri Estuary will be celebrated again this year by the Ahuriri Estuary Protection Society and everyone is invited.

The bar-tailed godwit/kuaka performs the longest nonstop flights of any non-seabird and is the most common Arctic migrant in New Zealand. Listen to the story of these incredible birds and the long migratory journeys they make, followed by a guided walk to view the birds.

Godwits/kuaka hold cultural significance for many New Zealanders. For Maori they were birds of mystery, ‘Kua kite te kohanga kuaka? Who has seen the nest of the kuaka?’

Meet: The carpark, opposite the Beach Inn, Meeanee Quay, Westshore

Bring: Binoculars (if you have some), sunhat, water bottle, suitable walking shoes (gumboots as maybe wet under bridge)

Children: Accompanied by an adult please.
