Napier Prison Tours

Discover the truth behind walls of New Zealand’s oldest prison. The historic prison is located on Napier’s Bluff Hill at 55 Coote Rd overlooking the Pacific Ocean and beautiful Centennial Gardens. View the old quarry where the inmates used to work their hard days’ labour to build the walls that would keep them imprisoned. Napier Prison is just a few minutes walk to the town centre and Marine Parade.

You will be given your own audio device and a map. Walk inside the walls and listen to the unforgettable stories surrounding the prison at your own pace.

Choose between listening to a Ghost Tour or Historical Tour.

The Historical Tour focuses on the historical day-­to-­day workings of New Zealand’s oldest prison. The Ghost Tour narrates gory stories about the people who were once incarcerated here and the strange things people experience to this day. The Prison has also been used as an insane asylum and orphanage, and has been home to many creepy happenings.

Our resident ghost cat Basil may even make an appearance!

Put your wits to the test at Hawke’s Bays premier escape attraction. Experience the worldwide Escape Game phenomenon inside a unique and unforgettable location as your team attempts to beat the clock and escape from a fiendishly locked room!

What is a live Escape Room?

You and up to 5 others get locked in a dedicated room full of clues and puzzles. You have 60 minutes to break out! Can you do it?

How does it work?

Using your eyes, ears, wits and wiles figure out the clues presented to you, open the locks that keep you from your goal and gather together what you need to escape. If all else fails, ask for a clue from your gaoler using the walkie talkies provided!

There are three rooms to choose between - The Prisoner's Dilemma, Earning Your Stripes and the Therapy Unit. There are two identical "Earning your stripes" rooms so you can challenge your friends and see who can escape in the fastest time.

$25.00 (R16 Only) per person

Scare tours are once a month on a Saturday or Friday night. Come for a guided tour of the prison after dark. Get ushered through the prison by a prison guard while the ghosts come out to play. Get locked in a cell and see how strong your mettle really is. Walk in the dark through the corridors and try not scream. We dare you!

Be taken on a guided tour around the complex with our highly knowledgeable guides. Guided tours are only available by appointment and minimum numbers apply. During the summer season weekly guided tours may be scheduled on the weekends.
